A collaborative alliance of over 200 African machine learning researchers from Masakhane, Lelapa AI, and top universities has released AfriLingo-70B, an open-source foundational language model.
Unlike Western frontier models that often mistranslate localized African idioms, AfriLingo was trained on indigenous cultural oral histories, court proceedings, local radio broadcasts, and verified vernacular text.
The model is already being deployed across agricultural extension chatbots in Kenya, maternal health SMS hotlines in Northern Nigeria, and voice banking bots in Ethiopia.
Lead research scientist Dr. Jessica Mukisa stated: "AI must speak our languages natively. When farmers and merchants can interact with cutting-edge intelligence in their mother tongues, digital inclusion becomes real."
