Cape Town Emerges as Africa's AI Capital — 40 Startups Raise $2.1B in 12 Months

Cape Town's tech ecosystem, colloquially dubbed the 'Silicon Cape', has reached unprecedented heights as venture capital investments into local artificial intelligence and robotics ventures crossed $2.1 billion over the past 12 months.

The influx of capital has been catalyzed by the presence of world-class universities like UCT and Stellenbosch, favorable remote work visa policies, and a booming cluster of applied AI labs solving continental challenges in mining automation, satellite crop yield prediction, and automated medical diagnostics.

Prominent local scaleups like Aerobotics, DataProphet, and NimbleAI have expanded their client bases across Europe and the Americas while keeping their research headquarters in the Western Cape.

"Investors are realizing that African engineers build AI models that are inherently resource-efficient because we are used to optimizing for low bandwidth and edge devices," said Venture Partner Zanele Sithole.
